The National Commission for Culture and Arts is set to award Maria Whang-od Oggay popularly known as Apo Whang-od the Dangal ng Haraya Lifetime Achievement Award in the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Prior to this conferral, the NCCA, the overall policy making body, coordinating, and grants giving agency for the preservation, development and promotion of Philippine arts and culture had been receiving petitions to give a National Artist Award to Apo Whang-Od. After long years of waiting, PCCO Asec Ana Maria Paz Banaag received an official letter from NCCA stating Apo Whang-Od as the recpient of the said award.
The Dangal ng Haraya Lifetime Achievement Award is given to Filipino Artist, cultural workers, and historians, artistic or culturan groups, historical societies, institutions, foundations, and council, as a fete to their outstanding achievements in relevant fields that have made an impact and significant contribution to Philippine Culture and Arts.
Whang-od Oggay, is a Filipina tattoo artist from Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga, Philippines. She is often described as the "last" and oldest mambabatok and is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group
